Summary

Unfortunately, white privilege is not a thing of the past as it lives on today but in a form often not recognized or acknowledged by those who benefit from white privilege. This seminar, sponsored by CELA's Racial Justice Committee, will examine why it is problematic, within our interactions as professionals and in our system of laws which were created by white supremacists, for the person experiencing white privilege to then detail their proximity to persons of color or their racial justice activities to prove that they are "non racist" when their white privilege is called out. It will explore the alternative approach to acknowledge the feelings and concerns of the person of color when white privilege is at work. Participants will also learn how to become an ally, or a more effective advocate to dismantle white supremacy and privilege it perpetuates by not assuming that because someone is crying they are helpless or innocent, or that because a person of color is using a raised voice they are uncooperative, unprofessional or any other radicalized stereotype. Importantly, it seeks to examine how white sensitivity in the current system can be addressed in a way that does not distract from the pressing topic of combating racism.
